There’s another interesting story about Social Networking and job-seeking doing the rounds today. Apparently, young people all over the country are seriously damaging their future prospects by posting personal information and content on Social Networks like Facebook and Myspace.
71% of 14-21 year-olds interviewed would want to change their profiles before allowing a potential employer to look at them, or so the report says.
Combine this with the ongoing worries about identity fraud, and you could be forgiven for thinking that someone’s got it in form Social Networking at a high level.
It is important to stress that we’ve never come across an instance of someone being refused a job on the back of a Social Networking page (it’s also worth stressing that we’ve never felt the need to vet the pages of anyone we’re considering offering a job to here) - and we’d seriously question anyone who gave that as an excuse for not making/withdrawing an offer (in fact, we’d question the logic behind accepting a job with an employer who don’t want you to have/disapprove of your private life).
The advice remains the same though - it’s not hard to make sure your profiles aren’t publically available - so make sure that private life is, well, private.
